We pretend that it’s different today than it was in the 50s – we’re not so naive! – but it isn’t. Marketing is as powerful and manipulative as it was 60 years ago, if not more so. You don’t think the advertising industry is spending billions of dollars in neurology and psychology labs to discover finer ways to induce us to consume?

What Salton Riviera is being advertised to you? Maybe it’s not a place. Maybe it’s a war, a bailout, a cultural norm…
