The No-Car City

January 26, 2011

From National Geographic: “Perugia, Italy has completely done away with cars. The minimetro zips people in and out, and pedestrians enjoy walkable streets free of exhaust fumes and traffic noise. Would you want to live in a no-car city?”

My response: FUCK YEAH I WOULD WANT TO LIVE IN A NO-CAR CITY!!!!!!!!

A few hours after seeing the article above, I ran across a study showing that traffic noise is a risk to health – the louder traffic is, the more the elderly are prone to strokes:  http://www.scientificamerican.com/podcast/episode.cfm?id=traffic-noise-ups-elderlys-stroke-r-11-01-26

I could feel quite at home in Perugia. I got rid of my hokin-tokin jalopy in 2005 and never looked back. I share the sentiments of these people.
